Dorit Shmuel

I am a mixed media artist, working primarily in acrylic paint and collage. My work looks to connect experiences from Israel, my home land, to my present life. I go back and forth in time, building and adding layers, feelings, experiences, while scratching and uncovering old remnants of what was. Therefore I work in many layers, adding paint and material as well as sanding it down and uncovering earlier layers. Most of my work is abstract, yet recently I've developed semi-abstracted landscapes and a series titled "Bayeet" (Home, in Hebrew), including more representational elements. My art journey and my life are about holding together the past and the present, the lightness with the darkness. It is the weaving together of the longing and the memories with the ongoing life.
